"THE CURE’s ROBERT SMITH will REPLACE MORRISSEY for a one night only THE SMITHS’ REUNION show, featuring JOHNNY MARR and MIKE JOYCE.
Last year, amid the announcement of Oasis’ big reunion, there was also some speculation that The Smiths’ may soon announce a reunion of their own. Those rumours, however, were quickly put to rest when Morrissey revealed Marr had "ignored" a "lucrative offer" to reform The Smiths for a global tour in 2025 (per BBC).
Now, it seems Marr has changed his mind - at least partially. The guitarist has announced a one night only show during which he and his former Smiths bandmate Mike Joyce will be performing songs by The Smiths, but with The Cure’s Robert Smith on vocals instead of Morrissey.
In response to the news, Morrissey gave a statement exclusively to Britpop News, saying: “This has got to be some kind of APRIL FOOLS joke!”
To which Marr replied in a separate statement: “It is.”
Happy APRIL FOOLS day!"
