INTERVIEW WITH LOL TOLHURST (12/14/2007)




Dear Lol,


First of all, I’d like to thank you on behalf of all the members of the ‘The Cure Brazil Forum’ for having accepted to be interviewed by Brazilian fans. It was really very kind of you and I must confess that I felt very delighted to be able to contact you and hear a ‘yes’ from you. Thank you.


Well, many The Cure Brazilians fans wonder what you and other ex-Cure members are doing now. Many still don’t know that now you have a new project called LEVINHURST and that it’s being very successful in the USA and other parts of the world. Having this in mind, I had the idea of interviewing you so that your Brazilian fans could hear the news about you and about LEVINHURST.


We received questions from some members of our Forum. We selected 15 of them. Some questions are related to the time you were at The Cure and others focus on your new project LEVINHURST.

1.Levinhurst has just finished a tour in the US. How was it?


A: The Tour was great, thanks! Met some new fans and some old fans.


2. What prompted the idea to have back to back shows with The Cure on the postponed tour?


A: I told Robert that I was planning a tour and wanted to do the same cities on the same day as The Cure as it makes sense as Cure fans and Levinhurst fans are probably the same people. I also asked if we could promote the Levinhurst show inside The Cure show to which he very kindly agreed.


3. You once you told me that you have very fond memories of Brazil. Could you tell us now what are the memories you have of our country?


A: I don't think that I have been anywhere on our planet where the colors and sights were so magnificent! I also really enjoyed the people’s energy and friendly attitude everywhere. Strangely enough in California my next door neighbor is a Brazilian and one of my son’s teachers is also!






4. Do you like being in contact with your fans through the internet?


A: Very much so! It used to take so long before the internet to talk to people by mail. Although the fact that anyone can now contact me means sometimes half my day is taken up with email, etc! I need a secretary!


5. I read somewhere that you’ve made up with Robert Smith and that you are again good friends. How often do you get in touch with each other?


A: Robert visited Los Angeles in 2000 and we met and talked long into the night one day about all that had happened between us and I think it is mostly resolved. We are in contact fairly regularly about various matters that we still have to attend to together and sometimes just to say hello.


6. Your last album ‘House by the Sea’ was claimed as the Electronic version of the classic Cure record, Pornography. Do you agree with it?


A: In that both albums are very honest explorations of the respective bands soul ...yes. In terms of sounds ...not really!
It’s more the intensity of emotion that is similar I think.





7. Levinhurst made a version of “All Cats are Grey” - one of the singles from the album “Faith” of The Cure. I’d like to know why you chose to record this song and how was your feeling when you listened to the new version that you made? Do you intend to make new versions of other songs of The Cure?


A: I wanted to record All Cats are Grey for two reasons: One it was being brought to people’s attention again in a movie and two it is one of the most personal songs to me of The Cure (The lyrics, which I wrote, are about my mother’s death). It seemed an appropriate time to join the dots (!) so to speak between these various threads.
I don’t think I will be rerecording anymore Cure songs but I may play a few Cure songs in Levinhurst sets from time to time to keep people happy!



8. We know that The Cure has no keyboardist now. If Robert Smith invited you to join the band again, what would be your answer?



A: I truly believe life is now. I would gladly play with people that have been my friends for most of my life again. By which I mean The Cure of course!






9. What do you think of The Cure from the 90’s on? Do you think that they’re still relevant and influent as musicians?


A: Like I said life is now for me not then or when, so I feel that we all have periods where our creative spirit is better than other times. It’s that I feel that is the most important aspect to keep alive. Without that creative spirit all dies and becomes destructive.


10. Do you like new bands such as Radiohead, Coldplay, Strokes and Interpol?


A: I like Radiohead more now than before .The new album and the other electronic stuff are great. I really like Thom's solo album too! Interpol I like the 1st and last album. Strokes I don’t really know and Coldplay hmm!


11. Among all the drummers that The Cure had, which one do you admire the most?


A: They all have their bright spots for me but mainly I would say Boris as he is the one I know the most...oh and me of course!!!





12. Some people say that The Cure should have stopped their career when you left the band and that those were magic years, so, if they had stopped at that period, they would have kept the best image of the band, because The Cure isn’t the same anymore. How do you see it? Do you think that they should have stopped there or it’s cool that they’re still active as a band?


A: I believe in creation and when here is no creation it’s destructive. Like I said, we all have periods of less creation. I think it’s only in music that people have to be continually creative (and young!) to be considered relevant.
Actually, I believe that’s really a ploy by the record companies to have a quick turnover of immature, naive young bands to stuff their coffers with money fast before they become wise to the nature of the music business and start insisting on a fair share of remuneration for their work.
It’s not in the interests of the record bosses to have bands like The Cure around so long as they end up having to pay out too much! It’s changing though, look at Radiohead bypassing the record labels completely!


13. What’s your opinion about Forums such as this one and communities dedicated to bands?


A: Anything that promotes the open exchange of ideas has to be a good thing. But bands should run their own sites not labels.


14. What do you miss the most about those Cure times?


A: We were young and invincible! As they say youth is wasted on the young!





15. Will Levinhurst ever play in Brazil?


A: Love to! Any promoters out there want to do it, please, contact us.

Ben ça on le savait déjà B4 three, je crois me souvenir qu'il l'avait déjà évoqué lors de l'interview qu'il nous avait accordé. enfin si j'ai bonne mémoire

Effectivement:

Pourquoi as-tu choisi ce morceau en particulier? As tu écrit ‘All Cats Are Grey’?

Oui c'est moi qui ai écrit les paroles. C'est pourquoi elle m'est si chère. Cela parle vraiment de ce que je ressentais lorsque ma mère est morte et que je me suis senti perdre la foi, l'espoir. C'était vraiment une période traumatisante lorsqu'on a fait Faith. Ma mère venait de mourir et la grand mère de Robert aussi. C'était très difficile.
