The Cure: 4:13 Dream
Robert Smith hates the term goth but when you sing a line like 'I don't want to bring you down about my suicide', as he does on The Reasons Why, you can't complain when your band gets co-opted as a teen-angst soundtrack.
But Smith is no one-trick gloom merchant. In cracking form, he roams over his own back catalogue, using a riff that could have been lifted from 1982's Pornography for Underneath The Stars, before launching into The Only One, a Cure pop moment that sways friskily into the present.
The result suggests the band is far from a spent force. The album may lack Disintegration's stylistic cohesion or Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me's giddy highs but its mix of tortured anthems and tongue-in-cheek guitar pop is unmistakably, lovably Cure.
